Eco-Friendly Holiday Gifts
In no time, the holidays will be here. A time of cheer, love, giving, and receiving. Something to keep in mind when buying your gifts - think about the packaging and the wrap. Think of this’.… every piece of plastic ever made still exists somewhere. It comprises our vehicles, our spacecraft, and medical equipment. It’s cheap so many produce it for single-use purposes. Bad news - there are very few organisms in the world that have proven to cause plastic to biodegrade. That means it can take hundreds if not thousands of years for plastic bottles in landfills or in nature to break down into something useful. I’ve mentioned them previously but a few more not so fun facts are:
Single use plastic accounts for half of all plastic thrown away, which includes throw-away packaging. An astonishing 32% of the 78 million tons of plastic packaging make its way. Buy bulk items and look for sensible packaging.
A half a million single-use plastic straws are used every single day. Say no to straws or buy a metal or silicon reusable straw and keep it with you.
4 trillion plastic bags are used every year around the world. Even though stores offer plastic bag recycling, only 1% of these bags are recycled. Bring your own reusable grocery bags!
Worldwide, we buy 1 million plastic bottles every minute. While most are recyclable, only about 23% actually are. Buy a stainless steel or BPA free bottle for your beverages.
10% of all the plastic we use ends up in the ocean. It doesn’t matter where in the world you visit, plastic can be found washing up on nearly every single beach.
As an environmentally conscious person, I try to encourage the 3 R’s, Recycle - Reduce – Reuse wherever I can. In this gift-giving season, I shop for ones that reflect that for my peeps. In keeping with that thought, here’s some suggestions of potential eco-conscious gifts or stocking stuffers for your friends, family, and business associates.
